WORK IN PROGRESS – POST
I had the enormous pleasure of running two workshops recently at the amazing lab space filmverstaden in Vaasa, Finland.
Such a great bunch of people came and it was really nice to do a hands on, practical workshop where a high degree of usefulness transpired.
Even though I have serviced and fixed many Eikis in my time I’ts still kind of fun to deal with common machine problems like deeply hidden lubrication to free stuck or jammed parts.
Its made me think that now is a good time to make a full documentation of how to go about looking after these machines (the service manual is a good place to start people!) and how to deal with common issues and problems.
4 TYPES of LUBRICANT: Engine (Petroleum) oil. Silicon oil 100cst. Silicon grease and Molybdenum disulphide grease.
As well as these I find one other thing useful in some situations. Aerosol 3in1 oil. This is useful for 2 common issues, the sound drum guide wheel getting stuck and the retainer spring pins that locate the take up and pay-off reel arms. When these become stuck and dont move freely a little 3in1 spray, aimed into the mechanism can free them up without the need to disassemble parts which in the case of the guide wheel is tricky.
These 4 types of lubricant have particular jobs which I have summarised generally in this chart.
But the service manuals, pages 20 – 25 has a comprehensive list of parts and their corresponding lubricant.
Here we see the switch from petroleum oil on worm/fibre gear to grease for later SSL models. Possibly Oil was a typo? as it is runny it will quickly leave these connecting gears and drip inside the machine. I’ve always used Silicon grease.
