It has a mad modification that allows any frame rate from 3 to 30 FPS to one decimal point, so you could run it at 23.9 fps if you were so inclined. Of course, there is no hard 24 setting, so when you do want to run at 24, it invariably goes to 24.3, or 23.8 etc. Oh well.

Anyways, they are nice machines with a fairly open film path that’s not too hard to lace up. Ill put details of lamps here, both Xenon and Halogen. Also minor fixes like the rubber O-ring replacements and perhaps details on the aperture plates which I had made for me.

They are not ‘portable’ unless you are a 10ft Gorilla. (Joe Young??) It takes two people to lift them.

The Xenon models have a significantly larger lamp house and look more bulky.

‘Migno’ in Italian means ‘Little’. I like the play on XenON, by adding an N to make MIGNON, I guess meaning ‘LITLLE XENON’.

They were manufactured by Microcine. But cant find much online about this company.

Heres link to nicely made video showing one in use.

One thing about these projectors as you can see from this clip is how far back the lens is seated on the main body. Of course there is room for a scope adapter, which are very large compared to 16mm ones. But this distance, as Rod always tells me, precludes wide angle lenses. Ill do some tests and come up with a focal length but for use in a gallery (or anywhere for that matter) , you cant use wide angle lenses as they hit the side of the machine. Shame.

The reel spindles are 7mm I believe and you can fit large capacity reels on the large spider reel holder thing that clamps on top and has an electric take-up motor.

Here’s my old Halogen one. I cant remember what lamps it took but the ones in Finland take vertical bi-pin 300/400 watt lamps and use a mirror. In many ways Halogen models are easier to use. 1. Theres no paranoia over striking the lamp. 2. Theres no obsessive hour meter reading. 3. MUCH cheaper to have spares. 4. MUCH easier to replace. 5. There’s no fear of lamp blowing up!

Yes, a Xenon lamp has a brilliant colour spectrum and are very bright, so the best for really critical, cinema style screenings. But lamps are NOT cheap. I guess you could fit a stereo reader and wire up a Dolby CP650, which you see around cheap nowadays, or even a CP55 which are even cheaper and easier to configure and you can get new CAT150 cards (see Dolby Legacy services) for. But while I’m here did I tell you about my crazy multi-channel sound from mono idea? You take the full range mono signal and split/matrix it into 4 channels. The you make extreme EQ adjustments to each channel/speaker to favour the programme material. Ie, channel 2 (Centre) you EQ the hell out of for dialogue. Channel 1 and 3, you EQ for music. Channel 4, roll off everything 150hz and above, basically a low-pass filter for BASS fx and noises/sounds. Will it work? Probably not, oh well.

Anyways, As there were two of them at Filmverkstaden I thought it would be nice to use them as a pair, side by side. So, as 35mm 2383 could be processed in Lomos I thought all we need is some way to capture onto the film, from projected material on super 8mm and 16mm. These would ideally be colour neg, to make a positive but they could also be b/w neg and via colour filters can do all kinds of composite things. The 35mm full gate frame will contain about 16 x super 8 frames for instance, or about 6 x 16mm frames. Could be FUN!!!

Heres a page or more on those great 35mm so called portable projectors you come across when you go to north Finland to teach how to fix 16mm projectors and someone opens a cupboard and there is two of them sat there waiting for some film love!!!
