I player live electronic synths and tone generators, sequenced and mixed live. I rehearsed and composed tracks in the weeks or days before gigs, and then played them live, usually only once. I recorded tons of CDs of these rehearsals, sometimes doing different mixes of the same programmed sequences.

Early gig at the Cube. A track I made for this show was a kind of recomposure, accidentally, of Kraftwerks ‘Autobahn’.

I used synths like the Doepfer 404 ( I had 3 at one point), Novation Bass-Stations and Drum-stations, FX units (usually cheap Zoom ones), filters, etc ALL powered by the doepfer MAQ, a MIDI sequencer. I also had a MFB sequencer for when the 3 channels of the MAQ ran out. I didn’t use modular gear mainly because 19inch rack gear was cheaper and I prefered them. I’d have to write down settings in this book and recall them when I was playing live. Some synths had memories so you could punch in #58 and then it would all reset to that sound. But some synths like the 404’s were properly analogue so I made some charts that I would fill out the settings of each dial on. I have got a small modular rack now and I like things like envelope followers which I incorporate with using 1/4 tape and samplers.

I also employed tone generators which made fat bass sine waves and could be used to make crude ring modulator sounds, some of them could even be triggered by CV controls.

I ended up playing only a dozen or so live gigs, sometimes supporting people like Pole, Murcof and Laurence English and took part in some Qujunktions events like quwack and the venn festival.

Me at a gig in Oxford that Andrew Hogan (Hog) put on. I never had decent studio monitors. I just made stuff with headphones and often checking/playing through the Cube PA to try ideas out. All the CDs still exist and I am planning on digitising them. I always thought that my levels were way out and that I’d need a multiband compressor to get them nice and fat and tight. I never got that far.

But the method was always the same, a strict use of live, improvised (improv-mixing) electronic sound, making material for concerts only and only playing tracks once.

© Adam Faraday. I recommend listening with headphones, quite loud, just because you need the pressure to get the signals up to the level used in live gigs. The first one says Vi 2 Tracks. This only shows one though. The second track is too long to upload at the moment. I found all footage online. It shows an amazing robotic chair artwork, sorry but I dont know who made it. The second robot is an early Honda creation called Asimo. The last thing is by Boston Dynamics. Again, quite early. If you search for what they are doing now its terrifying. The other clips are made by obviously pointing a camera at an oscillascope screen.

I came to really regard the mixing board as my main instrument. Wormfilmwerkplatz is a section of WORM that has loads of analogue film equipment like cameras, lomo tanks, steenbecks, printers, etc but more importantly incredible artists/artisans (shout out to Esther Urlus!!) who run the place and share their knowledge and skills.

My interest was in the optical sound track printing machine, the Klangfilm Eurocord.

I pulled along with me to Rotterdam a small (ish) vi rig and set it up in the same room as the Klangfilm. I then made a few tracks and recorded them live to 16mm mono VA optical sound, in full NR mode.

I then developed the films in the dark room. I did a few times then realised that I could rewind the film and shoot some image! The output would be picture AND sound, no sync but that wasnt important.

Heres loads of images and graphics below including a video of one piece I made.

The negs are still awaiting printing to positive film.

These images are frame scans I made on a printer of one of the films I made. Remember that 24 of these frames would flash past in a second. I recently learnt (at the new WORM during IFFR2020 when Esther showed me the new Lab) that the eurocord machine is set to run at 25 FPS!! Thats why those films sound ever so slightly sped up!!!!

This residency was done in 2010. After that my attention began to switch back over to images and the visual. At that time I acquired a Oxberry printer and started to realise that the forced march to digital in Cinema would more than likely throw up some priceless bits of gear. To me, entirely entrenched and stuck in the analogue world this could prove to be a golden age of re-purposing of tools. Luckily I have been proved right.

Analogue rules! (ok, with some clever bits of digital magic as well)!

UN – finished business

Actually, the end is the beginning. I played in a live ‘NoiseJam’ at the ICA in London before doing anything as Vi. Others there were Andy Gracie, Peter Hodgkinson (TUNK), Barry Nichols (ECM) and others (David Gilchrist mixed live) who I later invited to perform at an event at the Cube called ‘1000 Years Of Cinema’. I had a scanner (radio scanner) and a laptop with samples of analogue synths that I played in soundforge, usually slowed down, and sounds of bells, etc. Everyone cued their own sounds but Dave mixed in live, so he chose and arranged the whole piece. I can remember it was very loud but not many people.

I also took the jam idea and put on one NoiseJam event at the Cube.

Ill try and dig out documentation of this stuff in the coming months of C-19 tedium.

Volt Increment During the C-19 lockdown in spring 2020, after going through some old hard drives I came across a folder name Vi-MATERIAL that had loads of tracks, images and videos.
