The Bristol Channel

In 2009 I had the idea to do a tour where there was no venues, audience or anything. The idea was to tour the greater coastline area of the Bristol Channel and do ‘gigs’ whenever I could set up the equipment. Qujunktions had some money left over which was about enough to pay for the petrol. I asked my friend who had a van and at that time was into making sound systems and he agreed to come. We did the tour in September 2009.

Below is the poster I designed.

Afterwards I wrote a longish account of the whole expedition and you can read that here.

Tall took this, as he did actually all the tour documentation.

Here is an kind of interactive map thing I made afterwards. If you mouse over the red dots then photos come up showing locations.

I also made a film, well a video of the tour. I filmed at each location and made sound recordings. I compiled these into a 3 screen work that got at least one installation afterwards, at the Arnolfini.

The 3 screen film installed in the dark studio at Arnolfini.

I will upload the whole film once I have worked out how to get around the file size limit set by this WP install.

The film was made using tracks I recorded live at the locations presented in the video. Additionally, afterwards I used field recordings and other snippets of sound to fill in and join things together. The gig, at night, infront of the Severn Bridge was the highlight for me and this entire piece is included in the final film.

The tour of the Bristol Channel was my moment of fame. Fame amongst the dog walkers, hikers, farmers and strollers of the west country. Afterwards I crawled back into obscurity.

The view out the back of Talls van at Kilve.
The first gig / set up in Pembroke. The sun was so bright I couldnt see any LED lights or displays on any of the equipment. Caravaners, deck chair sunbathers, walkers and bird watchers all completely ignored me.
The weird pill box thing at Kilve. There is a good cream tea cafe nearby.
